The six vowels used in Navaho are: a, ae, e, i, o, u.
Their sounds, which, except for quantity and nasality, remain practically the same, are shown in the following table: a as in far, or the Navaho word abe, milk.

Short nasal sounds: a, e, i, 6, u.
The accented syllable is indicated by an accent placed over the vowels or diacritical marks, thus: a, 6, f, 6, d.
il indicates an accented n.

The more prevalent double vowels are pro¬ nounced as follows:
ai like i in hig*h, or Navaho word kai, willow, ei ei weig’h, '' ei, he.
ou as in the Navaho word ou, yes.
The abrupt close of a vowel is indicated by ( '), as in biye’, his son. When this mark pre¬ cedes n, the latter has nearly the sound of dn, like in Dnieper, as in the Navaho word se’ni- shodi, priest.
When ( ‘ ) is placed after a vowel it indicates an exhalation similar to h, as in tse‘, rock.
Completely separate pronunciation of two sounds is indicated by (’), as in ma’i, coyote; shana’a, ^ive me; agoFag^o, ever.
Consonants are pronounced as a rule like in English:
